One of the things I love so much about The Beard is that we can be kids. We are kids. I watch Harry Potter and eat popcorn for dinner. He plays gameboy and can’t even hear the word “uterus.” We don’t make our bed, we forget to take the trash out, and we love every animated movie that comes out. It’s a match made in heaven.
I love to make a big deal out of birthdays – I feel there is no better day to really fill someone’s love tank. It’s fun to treat everyone like they’re little kids on their birthday by making them wear funny hats, giving them fun homemade treats and taking them to do some silly activity. Especially if that person is The Beard and he is secretly a 12 year old boy – see this post from last year where I created the pinboard that describes my husband.
Last year The Beard was in his coding program, so we had hardly any time at all to celebrate. And lately our lives have been so unbearably adult – WE BOUGHT A STROLLER FOR PETE’S SAKE. Don’t think it was lost on us that that purchase could have been an iPhone 6. This is his last birthday as a childless man – next year he’ll be a 29 year old with an 8 month old!! He’s just been the biggest champ through all of this and I wanted to observe his birthday in the most youthful and Ryan way possible.
Wiffleball.
Once when we were dating he was supposed to pick me up for something; I forget what. After he was approximately 30 minutes late, I started to worry and sent him a text. Another 20-30 minutes later The Beard knocked on my door with grass stains on his jeans and a smile on his face.
“Sorry I’m late babe. Some kids were playing wiffleball in the park on Center so I joined them and lost track of time.”
That is the quintessential Beard and I love him so much for it. How great of a dad is he going to be?!
For his birthday I organized a surprise wiffleball game at the park by our house with some friends and family. My family’s tightest family friends, the Littledikes, have 3 young boys with whom The Beard has developed the cutest friendship. They play Mariokart on Christmas, wiffleball in the street at our St. George condo and The Beard makes every effort to go to their baseball games. They were sweet enough to come and bring their buddies, along with the Holdaways, Carlsons, Boulters and Ashbys for a very entertaining game. I think he had fun. 🙂
Dat hair, tho
Framing this and hanging it on my wall forever
We finished the night with Mexican food, presents (how cute are these Red Sox signs Drew (one of the little boys) made for Ryan?!!) and MarioKart.
Today is his actual birthday, filled with sleep, video games and Chad Holdaway’s famous Fettucini Alfredo as The Beard’s favorite dinner. So go wish him a Happy Birthday and tune in to my Twitter for some fun #BeardFacts honoring this man I love!

Ha! Jake has dreams of a wiffleball field in our backyard one day. I need to remember to have him invite Ryan next time they have a wiffleball or glow-in-the-dark ultimate frisbee game.
Happy Birthday Ryan!! You’re the coolest bearded man I know.
